Lime is used in wastewater treatment for pH adjustment, chemical precipitation, and alkalinity addition. It is available as quicklime (calcium oxide) or hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) but creates issues in storage as well as during operation.

The production of lime is an energy intensive process and is responsible for direct carbon emissions. The production of one ton of quicklime is responsible for 1170 kg of carbon emissions.

Our natural mineral solutions offer a direct replacement for commodity lime, reducing the risk to operators and the treatment process, as well as protecting equipment. Omya’s products have a much lower carbon footprint, which improves the sustainability of the water treatment process.

Safer to handle and dose 

Omya products are made from natural minerals which are non-toxic.

Quicklime and powdered calcium hydroxide are caustic, increasing the risk of injury to plant operators.

The use of commodity lime can cause rapid and substantial pH fluctuations, whereas Omya products are natural buffers, eliminating the risk of overdosing. 

Easier to store 

Liquid lime suspensions generally need constant agitation to prevent settling and separation.

In contrast, Omya’s liquid suspensions are stable for at least two months without agitation.

Liquid lime also causes scaling, whereas Omya products are non-corrosive and free flowing, reducing damage and pipe-clogging and leading to lower maintenance costs. 

Greater process efficiency at lower cost 

Omya products are highly reactive and efficient for neutralization and pH control, but with lower consumable costs than commodity lime.

They cause less downtime and maintenance costs than lime, are easier to manage, and offer a more sustainable solution.

The cost of commodity lime is affected by carbon taxes and rising energy costs, unlike Omya products.
